Bishop Diego won its last two games at its Bird Cage Classic and evened its season record to 3-3.
Summer Soto knocked down four 3-pointers en route to 16 points in a 37-35 win over Orcutt Academy. The Cardinals rallied from a four-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter, holding Orcutt Academy to just two points in the final stanza.
“The kids really played great defense after giving up 16 points in the third quarter,” said coach Jeff Burich.
The Cardinals finished the tournament with a 34-28 win over Thacher. Soto buried five 3-pointers and scored 17 points. She also played solid defense, Burich said.
Kylie Koeper hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to break a 17-17 tie.
“We opened up an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter and missed some free throws late making the game close,” said Burich.
The coach praised the play of Veronica Morones off the bench. She had 6 points. He also cited the play of Natalie Whiting.
Soto was named to the all-tournament team.
The Cardinals return to the court Saturday against Nipomo in the Green Division of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.
