Andy Gil made his coaching debut for Cate School on Tuesday in a 86-71 non-league loss to Valley Christian Academy.
Luke Nichols poured in 57 points for VCA.
Gil said his team showed its ability on offense but needs to clean up some weaknesses on the defensive side of the court.
Cate led after the first quarter by a point but VCA opened up a 10-point lead at halftime. Gil pointed out that the Lions were more aggressive, getting to the free-throw line 22 times compared to just three times for Cate.
“Excited for our young team and excited to keep playing,” Gil said.
The Rams travel to the Ojai Tournament on Thursday.
