Carpinteria won its first boys basketball tournament in more than 10 years, capturing the Fillmore Tournament with a 69-62 victory over the host Flashes on Saturday.
The Warriors were led by Rayshaun Moore and Brandon Jordan. Moore scored 11 points and dished out 8 assists. Jordan recorded a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds.
“We were able to take the lead early and maintain it till the finish,” said Carpinteria coach Johnny Ward. “It got close in spurts. We kept pushing the lead to double digits and letting down defensively, and Fillmore hit a lot of shots.”
Ward cited the contributions of Terrell Richardson, Malcolm Gordon, and Aaron Vargas. “We lost guard Eli Correa in the second quarter to a rolled ankle but our bench stepped up to help out Ray with the ball.”
The Warriors will take a 6-0 record into the Bashore Holiday Cage Classic on Friday. They open against Santa Ynez.
Carpinteria beat Santa Ynez, 71-64, in triple overtime in Friday’s semifinals at Fillmore.
