Chloe Allen and Phoebe Madsen were the “get-it-done” players for their respective teams. And their impact was a big reason San Marcos and Laguna Blanca enjoyed championship seasons.

Madsen’s all-around contributions led Laguna Blanca to the CIF-SS 4AA, CIF State Division 4 Southern Regional titles and to a runner-up finish in the Division 4 State Final.

The powerful Allen was the force behind San Marcos’ run to a share of the Channel League title and a CIF-SS Division 1A quarterfinal berth.

Presidio Sports is pleased to recognize Allen and Madsen as the Co-Players of the Year on the All-City Girls Volleyball team.

The players selected to the All-City Team are: Dani Abrams (Laguna Blanca), Gabi Peoples (San Marcos), Peyton Shelburne (Cate), Cat Hogan (Dos Pueblos) and Jessyca Beksa and Lourda Weger (Santa Barbara).

Madsen did it all for Laguna Blanca. She finished the team’s magical season with 264 kills on a .350 hitting average, 607 assists, 83 service aces and .317 digs.

“Phoebe put herself out there this year, both physically and mentally, and was rewarded with an MVP type of season,” Laguna coach Jason Donnelly said. “She wanted what was best for this team and was willing to do whatever it took to get to the top. Her ability to play multiple positions at a really high level allowed us a great deal of flexibility within our offensive system. She was constantly there to take a big swing when we needed one.”

Madsen will continue her career at Claremont McKenna College.

Allen is bound for UCSB after a stellar career at San Marcos. This season, she put away 326 kills and hit .250, picked up 223 digs and served 16 aces.

Coach Erica Downing said Allen raised the level of her overall game this season.

“Chloe has become such a well-rounded volleyball player,” she said. “She is a powerful hitter that has learned to be smart. She led our team in kills and total swings. “She was our leader and our go-to player the entire year.”

An ankle injury during the first set of the CIF quarterfinals at Trabuco Hills was huge blow for the Royals. Trabuco Hills couldn’t stop her.

“She was on track to take us pretty far in CIF if it wasn’t for that injury,” said Downing. “I’m looking forward to watching her career at UCSB.”

Gabi Peoples, S, San Marcos, Jr. — The Royals’ athletic setter and emotional leader handed out more than 600 assists. She also had 62 kills and served 24 aces. “She will do whatever it takes to win. We are lucky to have her come back next year,” said Downing.

Jessyca Beksa, OH, Santa Barbara, Sr. — The 6-1 UC San Diego-bound outside hitter was part of the Dons’ 1-2 punch on offense. She collected more than 400 kills this season.

Lourda Weger, OH, Santa Barbara, Sr. — Weger could play any position on the court. She, too, was a force on the outside, compiling more than 400 kills.

Cat Hogan, L, Dos Pueblos, Sr. — Hogan was a stalwart for the Chargers in the back row. She recorded 456 digs and posted a 2.4 (out of 3) passer-rating average. “Our offense was determined each and every match by how Cat passed the ball. She did a terrific job for us this year,” said coach Dillan Bennett.

Peyton Shelburne, OH, Cate, Sr. — Her consistent all-around game led the Rams to a second straight Frontier League title and a spot in the CIF-SS Division 4A semifinals. Shelburne notched 344 kills, hit .276, picked up 259 digs and had a passer rating of 2.22. “Peyton’s defense, serve-receive passing, blocking and ability to mix up her hitting and shots made her a lethal weapon,” said coach Greg Novak.

Dani Abrams, MB, Laguna Blanca, Sr. — Abrams was a force in the middle on both sides of the net and a key to the Rams’ history-making season. She finished with 228 kills, hit .335 and recorded 43 blocks. “She is a true middle and, when we were able to get her the ball early, it opened up the rest of our offense,” said coach Donnelly.
