UCSB will play South Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament on Sunday at Harder Stadium. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
The Gamecocks advanced with a 2-1 penalty-kick shootout victory over Furman in a first-round match on Thursday at South Carolina. The teams were tied 1-1 after regulation and two overtime periods.
South Carolina’s Kurtis Turner scored the game-winning PK in the fourth round of the shootout.
The Gamecocks (11-7-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute. Furman sent the game into overtime with a goal in the final 18 seconds of regulation.
UCSB will be playing in its 12th NCAA Tournament. The Gauchos have an 11-2 record in NCAA tourney games at Harder Stadium.
South Carolina is in the tournament for the 20th time. Gamecocks coach Mark Berson is the winningest active coach in Division 1 and ranks third all-time with 472 wins. He’s coached at South Carolina for 38 years.
