Julia Gan, Jackie Cai, and the Rams’ top doubles team were unstoppable on Wednesday in the first round of the CIF Division-2 girls tennis tournament. Cate recorded a 14-4 victory over Trabuco Hills and advanced to Friday’s second round.
The Rams are the No. 5 seed after a regular season in which they won the Tri-Valley League championship.
Gan and Cai swept three singles sets while Summer Christensen and McKenna Madden grabbed three doubles sets 6-2, 6-0, 6-2.
The rest of the Cate lineup picked up five points to secure the win. The Rams led 5-1 after the first round.
“I was impressed by the intensity Julia and Jackie showed in the opening round, which I believe set the tone for the rest of the match. Julia had her trademark game-face on and Jackie played a very smart tennis throughout the day,” reported Rams head coach Trevor Thorpe.
“In doubles, we took eight sets with aggressive net-play and good communication. It’s no secret to anyone I’ve coached over the years that I have a passion for doubles, so it’s exciting for me to see the progress our doubles lineup has made this season.”
