Breakers high school team entering second season

Call it “Things You May Not Know” or Ripley’s Believe it Or Not but there was a local Santa Barbara Breakers Boys High School Basketball Team that played a 16 game season in 2014-15.

Several fathers and high school student-athletes came to Curt Pickering of the Santa Barbara Breakers basketball team in November 2014 and asked if it was possible to create a high school basketball team for individual’s who did not make their high school team. Pickering put in a call to Keith Luberto, former Head Boys Basketball Coach and Athletic Director at Providence High School. Luberto started a Home School team for PHS several years ago until they became accepted into the CIF. One more phone call to the Director of the Home School Association for California, Scott Brummett, followed by paperwork and a few more conversations, and the Breakers were in. The team utilized 16 players during their first year run of a 8-8 win-loss record. These players represented the following schools: Anacapa, Providence, Laguna Blanca, Dos Pueblos, Santa Barbara, San Marcos, Bishop Diego and Home-schooled students.

Since then, two players have made their local high school team, two are now college students, while the Breakers return 8 players from last season’s roster.

The Breakers will begin the 2015-16 season with an away game in Camarillo on December 12. They will play 8 games at home and 8 games on the road in Camarillo, Thousand Oaks with 2 tournaments penciled in at San Bernadino and Chino. The Head Coach for the Breakers is Trey Putnam, a 1999 graduate and Dons player for Santa Barbara High School. He continued his education and playing days at Dominican College in the SF Bay area. Putnam has coached at local high schools and Club Basketball Teams for several years.

If any 9-12th graders are interested in participating on the team for this season, contact Curt Pickering at 805 969-7542 or [email protected]
