Undefeated Bishop Diego drew Newbury Park for the first round of the CIF Northern Division football playoffs. The playoff pairings were released Sunday morning.
Bishop and Newbury Park will play Friday night at La Playa Stadium.
The Cardinals,who went 10-0 during the regular season for the first time since 2012, are champions of the Tri-Valley League. Newbury Park (6-4) finished third in the Camino League and received an at-large berth into the playoffs. Newbury Park lost to Thousand Oaks, 36-35, in a game for second place on Friday night.
The Panthers are led by sophomore quarterback Cameron Rising. He’s thrown for nearly 2,891 yards and 36 touchdowns. He tied a Ventura County record this season with 7 TD passes in a game against Dos Pueblos.
Carpinteria (4-6) qualified for the playoffs as the runner-up in the TVL. The Warriors drew a first-round game at Antelope Valley (7-3), the second-place team from the Golden League. Carpinteria will be making its debut in the Division 3 playoffs.
This is the second year the TVL will play in Division 3. Bishop Diego won its first-round game last year against Antelope Valley and lost in the second round at Atascadero.
Camarillo, 10-0 and champion of the Camino League, is the division’s top-seeded team and Pac-5 champion Arroyo Grande (9-1) is No. 2. Los Padres League champion Lompoc (9-1) is seeded third and Golden League champion Palmdale (10-0) is the fourth seed.
The first round games are scheduled for Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
In the Western Division (Division 7), Channel League-champion Ventura (6-4) will host at-large team Mira Costa (8-2) of the Bay League, while runner-up Buena (7-3) is home to Lawndale (5-5) of the Ocean League.
The top four seeds in the Western Division are Calabasas, Palos Verdes, North Torrance and Redondo.
