SBCC had a season-high 18 steals in Friday’s opener of the Battle of the Beach women’s water polo tournament and downed Grossmont 7-3 at Cerritos College. The Vaqueros (13-10) played defending state champion Fullerton (20-2) in the afternoon and dropped a 14-5 decision.
The tourney, hosted by Long Beach, features 24 teams playing at three colleges.
Addison Seale collected eight steals and four assists in the Grossmont game. Kendra Carr had two goals and four steals and Nicole Cosares added two goals and three steals for the Vaqueros, who won the second half 5-1. Goalie Mackenzie Richards made 11 saves.
Cosares had a hat trick with three goals against Fullerton.
“We played well today, especially with a team high in steals,” said coach Chuckie Roth. “We have a great opportunity against San Diego Mesa on Saturday.”
The Vaqueros will take on San Diego Mesa (19-2) on Saturday at 8 a.m. in a fifth-place semifinal.
