Warrior setters spread the ball around in Friday night’s Golden State Athletic Conference match as six different players had between five and seven kills apiece in #16 Westmont Volleyball’s three-game sweep of Arizona Christian (0-11, 2-19). The Warriors, who improved to 16-5 overall and 8-3 in GSAC play, doused the Firestorm by scores of 25-11, 25-9 and 25-8.
As a team, Westmont posted an attack percentage of .357, producing 39 kills on 84 attempts. Westmont also scored from the service line, tallying ten aces including three each by Alexa Nestlerode and Jessica McCann.
McCann and Sydney Striff led all Warriors with seven kills each while Taylor Beckman (.625 attack percentage) and Sarah McGough (.600 attack percentage) each added six. Emma Harrah (.444 attack percentage) and Marissa Fuerst (.333 attack percentage) contributed five kills each to the Warriors’ totals.
The Warriors used long runs to take control of each set. With the scored 8-6 in the opening frame, Westmont went on an 8-0 run that included two kills each by Beckman and Striff.
Tied at four in the second set, Westmont collected the next six points as part of a 21-5 run. Westmont opened the third set with a 6-0 run and later put together seven points in a row to secure the match.
In other GSAC action, #1 Biola (21-2, 10-1) downed Menlo (4-18, 2-9) in straight sets while #17 The Master’s (17-8, 8-3) posted a sweep of San Diego Christian (11-10, 3-8). In Fullerton, William Jessup rallied from a two-set deficit to tie Hope International before succumbing to the Royals in five sets.
As a result of tonight’s action, Westmont remains in a tie for third place with The Master’s. Eighth-ranked Vanguard (17-4, 10-0) sits atop the conference standings, one-half game ahead of Biola who is in second.
The Warriors will take on San Diego Christian in an afternoon game tomorrow. First serve is scheduled for one o’clock.
