Baylee Vincent scored in the 10th minute on Friday night and Sarah Jimenez added a long second-half goal as SBCC blanked Oxnard 2-0 in a women’s soccer game at La Playa Stadium.
Vincent took a pass from Lena Gustafsson, who moved from defender to forward for this game, and tallied her third goal of the year from about 10 yards on the left side and SBCC led 1-0 at the half.
“Lena is a strong girl and she holds the ball well, so we thought we’d try her up top,” explained coach John Sisterson. “She had plenty of chances with a breakaway early and then she hit the bar in the first half. I don’t think she was offside once, who knows what the next game will bring?
The Vaqueros improved to 7-4-4 overall and 2-1-3 in conference. They’re No. 11 in the RPI ratings and would make the 18-team Southern Cal playoffs for the sixth straight year if they started today. Oxnard fell to 5-7-4 and 1-6-1.
Jimenez, a sophomore from Newbury Park, tallied her first goal of the year on a high-arching 30-yard shot from the right side in the 62nd minute.
“I was thinking of crossing the ball but Kat (Kathryn Sullivan) laid a great ball back to me, so I just went for it,” said Jimenez. “I thought we played great today. We’ve been working really hard in practice and it showed on the field with us connecting on a lot of passes and creating a lot of chances.”
The Vaqueros outshot the Condors 21-5, including 6-3 in shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Alex Camarillo, a freshman from Dos Pueblos High, made five saves and recorded her seventh shutout. She has four clean sheets in the last five games and one of those was a shared shutout with Kasey Jensen.
“Andrea (Skjold) was very good on defense and so was our keeper, Alex,” Sisterson added. “It’s always good to have a clean sheet.”
The third-place Vaqueros travel to second-place L.A. Pierce (8-1-6, 4-0-3) on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. game in Woodland Hills.
