SWM: Low is big winner in UCSB debut

The UC Santa Barbara women’s swimming team had their season debut today in a three-way duel meet against the women of UCLA and Oregon State. UCSB beat Oregon State handedly, 180-76, but fell short against UCLA, 132-113.

The Gaucho women tallied six total wins for the day, including a win for both relays. Several women also made their UCSB swimming debuts today, including junior transfer Cheyenne Low who contributed two relay wins and one individual event victory.

UCSB’s “A” medley relay, consisting of Cheyenne Low (26.30), Katie Records (29.24), Kelsey Leonard (25.42), and Lauren Vosseler (23.06) sealed the first Gaucho win of the day in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.02. UCSB’s “B” relay took third in the event.

Cheyenne Low earned her second win of the day in the 100 backstroke, blowing the rest of the heat out of the water with a 55.85. Julia Mikota (57.13) took third.

The Gaucho breaststrokers stacked up several points with a one-two-three finish in the 100 breaststroke. Katie Records (1:03.82) led the pack, followed by Charis Hoppe (1:04.95) and Jiana Vargem (1:05.95).

Lauren Vosseler (23.46) took home a win in the 50 freestyle, blazing ahead of the rest of her heat by over half a second.

Katie Records (2:18.01) sealed a win in her second event of the day, the 200 breaststroke. Alyssa Shew (2:21.54) took third in the event.

Records placed second in the final individual event of the meet with a 2:07.42 in her 200 IM swim.

The Gaucho women concluded a solid meet performance with a one-two finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
