Orla O’Doherty, the squash professional at the Santa Barbara Athletic Club, was honored as the recipient of the prestigious Feron’s Wedgwood Sportsmanship Award.
The award presentation took place at the at the U.S. Open of Squash in Philadelphia.
A native of Ireland, O’Doherty represented her home country three times at the World Championships and reached a world ranking of No. 69. Since coming to the U.S. over 20 years ago, she has taught squash at the Heights Casino in Brooklyn and SquashBusters in Boston and coached at Cornell, MIT and Tufts. She is the head pro at the SBAC and squash director at the local urban squash program, Santa Barbara School of Squash.
In accepting the award, O’Doherty recited an Irish proverb: “Beautiful young people are acts of wonder; beautiful old people are works of art.”
