One of the advanced classes Mike Nettesheim takes at Cate is a history course called Great Migration.
Nettesheim knows something about moving a football team down the field. He is the quarterback for the undefeated Rams. He also is a standout tennis player and an outstanding student. On Monday, he was recognized as Cate’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s press luncheon.
Nettesheim carries a 4.1 GPA taking a course load that includes advanced English, advanced art history, calculus, physics and honors choral. As a junior, he won a Dartmouth Book Award and a school-wide writing contest. His academic interests include English, writing, history, and international politics.
On the field, Nettesheim is a leader. He is captain of the football and tennis teams. Last year, he was an All-CIF honorable mention selection for 8-man football and earned All-Tri-Valley League first-team honors in tennis. He and his doubles partner went undefeated last season. He also plays basketball.
His community work includes being an academic representative at Cate and working with a group called Indigenous Education Foundation of Tanzania. The group helps fund raise for school scholarships for kids in that African country.
Nettesheim plans to attend Williams College.
