Westmont scored first in Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference game, but 6th-ranked Vanguard produced four unanswered goal to claim a 4-1 win at Thorrington Field.
Freshman Tim Heiduk took advantage of a ball sent into the box by Blake Joyner to score in just the third minute of play. Joyner served the ball into the top of the box toward Brandon Talsma. Vanguard’s keeper reacted to a fake shot by Talsma, but the ball continued to Heiduk who scored from 12 yards out.
Just seconds later, Vanguard (11-2, 5-1) evened the score when Brian Torres, who was dribbling down the center of the field, passed the ball to Ivan Azpeita. Azpeita scored from 10 yards out on the right.
Vanguard took the lead in the 37th minute of play, going up 2-1. Jesus Fregoso took a penalty shot which Westmont goalkeeper Josh Glover saved. However, the ball bounced back into play and Fregoso was able to deliver the rebound into the back of the net.
The third goal came in the 56th minute when Brian Torres slotted a ball to Juan Arellano who scored to make the tally 3-1. The final goal was produced in the 71st minute. Daniel Yo passed the ball to Nahum Paz who finished from five yards away.
Westmont falls to 6-5-1 and 3-3 in GSAC play.
