Nicolas Genthon scored on a sliding kick in the 34th minute on Tuesday night and SBCC dominated the second half in a 1-0 men’s soccer win over Citrus at La Playa Stadium.
Carlos Archila Calderon, who entered the game just five minutes earlier, hit a through ball to Kebba Nyang in the 34th minute and he crossed it to Genthon for an open-net score. Genthon, a freshman from Houston, leads the team in goals (6) and points (13).
The Vaqueros (6-3-2, 2-2-2 WSC) outshot the Owls 10-2 in the second half and 16-6 for the game. Citrus (1-8-1, 1-5-0) had just one shot on goal in the 44th minute.
“I thought we played OK,” said coach John Sisterson. “We made a few changes at the 28-minute mark and started to knock the ball around. They made an immediate impact.
“I thought we’d get another goal or two. We competed very well. Billy (William Joyce) was outstanding in midfield, he covered some ground today. And Jacob Salas also played well at left back. He started on the right and we switched him to the left and he played an excellent game.”
The Vaqueros had several solid scoring opportunities. Christopher Castro Maturino headed a ball toward the top shelf in the 21st minute but goalie Bryan Landgreen leaped to tip it over the bar.
Genthon headed in a one-bounce shot in the 38th minute but it was wiped out by offsides.
It was the first shutout of the year for goalie Angel Cervantes, a freshman from Santa Barbara High. The Vaqueros have three shutouts on the season.
SBCC will host Santa Monica on Friday at 2 p.m.
