Top-ranked Cate received a challenge from Ventura’s Foothill Tech and needed four sets to win the Frontier League match on Tuesday. The scores were 25-14, 25-18, 24-26, 25-20
“Foothill is good and is going to make a definite mark in league,” Cate coach Greg Novak said. “They grew in size, have great defenders and a lot of talent. We struggled in the first two sets but managed to pull away around the 12 mark. We earned a lot of points off of Foothill’s hitting errors.”
The Rams were on the verge of a sweep, but they let 24-20 lead get away in the third set.
“Foothill’s defense took charge and they didn’t let the ball drop,”Novak said. “We had our chances but we couldn’t close the deal.”
Cate trailed 15-9 in the fourth set before Morgan Crew and Peyton Shelburne got on a serving runs to tie the score a 15-15. The Rams carried that momentum the rest of the way.
Cate improves to 14-6 overall and 5-0 in league. The Rams host Carpinteria on Thursday.
