Carpinteria’s girls tennis team won the close sets on Wednesday, tipping the scales in the Warriors’ favor for a 13-5 non-league victory over Laguna Blanca.
The Warriors’ doubles lineup won seven sets and singles took six. The doubles tandems of Athena Cuellar/Maria Zamora and Alondra Costilla/Jeanette Fantone were especially potent, sweeping three sets each.
“Alondra and Jeanette had never played together before but they meshed right away and only dropped four games on the day,” noted Warriors head coach Charles Bryant.
Madison Cleek’s sweep in singles was helped by a good job of coming to the net and putting away volleys.
“Overall, we played much tougher mentally which translated into a lot less unforced errors and better shot selection,” Bryant said. “I think the girls have learned a lot from our competition over the past few weeks and it has helped them in these tighter matches.”
Carpinteria (5-10) faces Malibu on Thursday.
