GTen: Warriors edge Sharks for TVL playoff spot

Carpinteria clinched a playoff spot on Wednesday by defeating Malibu, 10-8, in a Tri-Valley League match.

“Just an amazing effort by all of the girls,” said Warriors head coach Charles Bryant. “I am proud of how hard they have worked this season. Our practices probably have not been that exciting as we really stress a lot of fundamentals and a lot of repetition but I think it paid off for them.”

Madison Cleek won her final set 6-4 to seal the match for the Warriors, who would have lost on a games tiebreaker. Cleek finished 3-0 in singles. Kathryn Blair won two sets, including another clutch set in the final round.

“Both teams knew going in that it was going to be a tight match and we really stressed playing one point at a time and staying focused throughout. One small derailment could have ended our season but the girls were resilient,” Bryant said.

Alondra Costilla and Jeanette Fantone teamed in doubles and claimed three points for Carpinteria. Their final set was another tight one as the Warriors duo rallied from three games down to win 7-5.
