The San Marcos girls tennis team saw a lot of success in the Channel League Individual tournament on Thursday, as Yuka Perera clinched the singles title while the power duo of Renee Handley and Sarah Yang made it to the finals in the doubles department.
Perera, the singles tournament top seed, took home the title after a riveting three-set match with crosstown rival Santa Barbara’s Cade Sorensen. Perera cruised to 6-2 set win the first, before Sorensen countered with a decisive 6-1 defeat in the second. It came down to the deciding set which Perera won 6-2.
In the doubles department, Handley and Yang came up victorious in a 6-0, 6-2 semifinal conclusion over Dos Pueblos’ Catherine Wang and Saylor Yoos. However they were stopped short in the final by Buena’s number one doubles front of Caisey Lee Emery and Colby Shae Emery. Caisey Lee, last year’s singles champion, teamed with her younger sister to hand Handley and Yang their first loss of the season.
The Chargers’ No. 1 doubles squad of Katie Yang and KC Egger made it to the semifinals but were defeated by the eventual champions.
