San Marcos’ Mallory Sestak medaled at La Cumbre Country Club on Thursday, but Dos Pueblos earned the team win in a 221-236 decision that clinched an undefeated Channel League season for the Chargers.
The course at La Cumbre Country Club is a beautiful location for golf but challenged both teams, resulting in DP’s highest score of the league season. But that was an afterthought as the Chargers came away with their 17th Channel League title in a row.
“This is one of many titles we are proud to have,” said Chargers senior Jamie Sharpe. “This was a harder course and we don’t have a lot of practice on it. We play it about once a year. This round gives us a little more confidence as we head into individuals.”
No player had an outstanding performance with the exception of Sestak who recorded a 40. She knew her home course well was able to sink putts when it counted. Bella Vigna and Megan Caird led Dos Pueblos with a pair of 43s.
“This is a tough course. We knew we wouldn’t shoot a season high here. The job was to avoid big mistakes,” said Chargers head coach Rob Schiff. “San Marcos is a tough team. We were able to come to a course that isn’t ours and win.”
San Marcos came into the round 6-1 with its only loss coming from the Chargers.
“We played pretty well but not as well as we were capable of. We were hoping to score a little bit better on the course together but we got into some trouble and were not able to get out of it as efficiently as we had hoped,” said Royals head coach Sarah Ashton.
Dos Pueblos comes away 11-1 and unscathed at 8-0 in league play. San Marcos finishes 12-3 and 6-2 in league.
The Channel League individuals begin on Monday October 19.
