Freshman Carolin Chang shot a 1-under 70 on Monday and SBCC recorded its lowest women’s golf score in a month to capture WSC No. 7 at Simi Hills Golf Course.
Chang collected three birdies en route to her fifth win of the season. Jamie Lopez of Citrus was second at 73, Lexandra So of Citrus took third at 74 and SBCC freshman Isabella Doub was fourth with a 76, her second-best score of the year.
Chang has shot par or better in eight of 12 rounds and has a 72.3 average.
The Vaqueros won their second straight WSC tourney with a 315 total that was eight strokes better than Citrus. Canyons was third at 333.
SBCC (29-6) holds a one-game lead in a tight race for the WSC title. Citrus is 28-7 and Canyons is 27-8 with two tourneys remaining.
Santa Barbara has won four WSC tourneys this season and seven overall. The Vaqueros are 61-6 on the year.
Miraya Ramirez shot 84, her best round in seven weeks for the Vaqueros, and Natalya Cruz had an 85. SBCC was playing without its No. 3 player Vanesa Villa, who missed the tourney due to illness.
“I’m really happy because we hadn’t seen this course and everyone else had played a bunch of times here,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “We were down a player and we still shot 315, which is our best score in a while.
“When you have everyone in the 70s and 80s, that’s a good thing. Isabella is starting to get her game back and we’re getting our confidence back.”
The next two tournaments will be at a place the Vaqueros are familiar with, the Alisal River course in Solvang. Alisal will be the site of the WSC Finals (WSC Nos. 8 and 9) on Nov. 1-2 and the Southern Cal Championships on Nov. 8-9.
