Kyril Van Schendel and Charlotte Monke led Cate to victory on Saturday at the 6th annual Musser Challenge held on the Rams’ Mesa Course.
The race’s unusual format had boys and girls racing at the same time. The girls started three minutes and 20 seconds ahead and then the scoring was added up by school regardless of gender. Cate won the unified team matchup over Viewpoint 88-113.
Viewpoint’s James Smathers won the race in 20:43, adjusted to 17:23 in real time. Van Schendel, a sophomore, finished second in 20:50.
Monke and Cate sophomore Isabella Montes de Oca crossed in third and fourth place, respectively. Monke’s time was 20:57 and Montes de Oca’s 21:16.
Scored conventionally, Cate would have won both meets, the girls 25-31 and boys 24-31.
The Rams next race next on Thursday in the first Tri-Valley League meet at El Camino Park in Ventura.
