San Bernardino Valley scored three times in the first 24 minutes on Tuesday and went on to defeat SBCC 4-2 in a nonconference women’s soccer match at La Playa Stadium.
Amairany Rosales scored on a bicycle kick in the 10th minute and Leandra Garlinger made it 2-0 three minutes later by chipping a ball to herself and scoring from 10 yards out. Rosales tallied her second goal in the 24th minute, taking a pass on the left side and faking out two defenders and the goalie for an open-net score that made it 3-0 at halftime.
“We started the game like we weren’t ready to play,” said assistant coach Goffin Boyoko. “When you start like that against a decent team, a playoff team, that’s what’s going to happen.
“We made two mistakes and they scored three goals. We came back ready for the second half but the game is 90 minutes and you can’t give up the first 45.”
The Vaqueros (5-2-1) suffered their second straight home defeat after going unbeaten (13-0-2) in the their previous 15 games. The Wolverines are 8-1-1 and have outscored their opponents 46-5.
Josefine Von Der Burg, a freshman from Sweden playing in her third college game, scored her first two goals for the Vaqueros. In the 59th minute, she hit a low corner kick from the left side that was cleared by a defender right back to her and she scored from 24 yards away to make it 3-1.
Garlinger notched her second goal of the game and 10th of the year in the 61st minute, taking a pass from Rosales and faking out two defenders and the goalie with a crossover dribble that created an open-net goal from 22 yards out.
Two minutes later, Von Der Burg struck again with a 25-yard blast from the left side on an assist from Kaitlyn Saperstein, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
“We realized in training that she can score with her left foot and right foot,” noted Boyoko. “She’s a left-footed player and she scored two right-footed goals outside the box, which is really good for her. Hopefully, we can build from that and start scoring more goals.”
The Vaqueros outshot the Wolverines 14-9, including 8-6 on-goal. SBCC had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
“I just try to be calm and look at the ball,” said Von Der Burg. “Usually I’m left-footed but my right was really good today. I try not to think and when I do that, I tend to play better. We needed more energy in the first half.”
