Freshman Jessica Parque scored her second goal in as many matches to snap a 1-1 tie early in the second half to lead the UC Santa Barbara women’s soccer team to a 3-1 win over visiting Sacramento State on Sunday.
Parque’s game-winner was unassisted as she collected a loose ball outside the upper-left corner of the box, dribbled just inside the 18-yard box and blasted a shot into the upper right side of the goal just 2:16 into the second half.
Senior Angelisa Cortez gave the Gauchos some insurance at the 72:25 mark when she took a pass from Dakota Griggs and cracked a shot near the same spot as Parque’s. Cortez’s shot also went in on the right side.
UCSB struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. Griggs served a perfect ball into the box from about 25 yards out on the right side and Mallory Hromatko climbed the ladder, heading a shot into the right side of the goal.
Sac State tied the score in the 35th minute when Adaurie Dayak received a pass from Alyssa Anderson on right near the left side of the goal box and poked a shot into the far right post, past outstretched Gaucho goalkeeper Jacq Caginia.
UCSB dominated the match from the start and outshot Sac State by a 21-9 margin. Parque had a team-high five shots while Cortez added four. Maggie Pleis had three, all on frame, for the Hornets.
With the win, the Gauchos (2-2-1) have a two-match winning streak and they have been unbeaten in their last three, all at home. The Hornets are now 1-4-0.
The Gauchos return to action on Friday, Sept. 11 when they travel to Pittsburgh to play Duquesne University in a match that will kick-off at 3:00 p.m. (PDT).
