The Golden State Athletic Conference opener didn’t go as Westmont Men’s Soccer (3-3-1, 0-1 GSAC) would have hoped. After giving up two halftime goals, the Warriors evened the score in the second half with goals by Blake Joyner and Wilton Quintero. However, in just the second minute of overtime, San Diego Christian’s (6-3, 1-0) Francisco Ramirez scored a golden goal to give the Hawks the win.
In the 35th minute of play, Borja Suarez scored on a breakaway to put the Hawks up 1-0. Less than two minutes later, a cross from Joseph Fortini to Sebastian Carrion resulted in the ball finding the back of the net again and a 2-0 hole for the Warriors.
Westmont’s first goal came in the 57th minute after Asher Booth sent a ball to the top of the box and Blake Joyner deposited it in the right corner. In the 81st minute, the Warriors were awarded a penalty kick. Quintero converted the attempt to tie the score.
Ramirez’ game winner came off a pass from Suarez.
Westmont returns home for a game on Saturday at Thorrington Field against #8 Vanguard (7-1, 1-0). Kick-off is scheduled for noon.
