For the third time in six days, Westmont Men’s Soccer has played in an overtime game – getting a different result in each contest. Tonight, the Warriors took on #3 Marymount at Los Angeles Harbor College and played to a scoreless draw.
On last week’s trip to Ohio, the Warriors suffered a heartbreaking double-overtime 2-1 loss to #5 Rio Grande (Ohio) and then responded with a 2-1 overtime win over Point Park (Pa.) the next day.
In tonight’s game, Marymount took 13 shots, placing three of them on goal. The Warriors countered with 12 shots, seven of which were on target.
“It was actually a good game to watch,” said Westmont head coach Dave Wolf. “It was an open game with both teams moving up and down the field, both teams getting into the box and both teams getting chances. It was a draw, but not a conservative draw.”
Westmont’s best chance to score came in the 10th minute off the foot of Brandon Talsma.
“Brandon took the ball in the middle of the field and let fly a hard shot from 30 feet away that was headed for the top corner,” reported Wolf. “Marymount’s goalkeeper was able to just get a hand on it and send it over the top of the crossbar.”
Westmont goalkeeper Josh Glover earned his second shutout of the year, tallying three saves in the process. With the clean sheet, Glover drops his season goals-against-average to 0.58
“Josh was really quite impressive,” said Westmont head coach Dave Wolf. “He was very sharp, especially verbally. I think it was one of his better games organizationally and comes against a pretty potent team.”
Of concern to the Warriors is a possible season-ending injury to Yazi Hernandez that occurred in approximately the 40th minute.
“We won’t know for sure until we have it checked out, but it is likely that he tore his ACL,” reported the coach. “That is a very difficult for us, especially since we already have lost Nate Ruble.”
The Warriors return to Thorrington Field for a game against first-year program Sierra Nevada on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
