Valencia edged San Marcos’ girls tennis team, 11-7, on Thursday in a non-league match decided in the final two sets by 6-4 wins in favor of Valencia.
Royals head coach Fred Hartzman felt his team played extremely well despite the loss.
“That was some of the best tennis I have seen played on these courts in a long time. Valencia has two 4-star recruits playing singles and some very strong doubles teams,” Hatrzman said.
San Marcos’ Yuka Perera pulled off a nice win by defeating Jennifer Shin 6-3 after being down 0-3. Perera finished 2-1 on the day.
In doubles, Renee Handley and Sarah Yang swept three sets with identical scores of 6-1.
“Renee and Sarah played some great doubles today. To beat 3 quality teams all at 6-1 is really impressive,” Hartman commented.
The Royals, who open Channel League play on Friday, even their record at 1-1.
