SBCC had an off-day on Monday in WSC No. 3 and Canyons and Citrus took advantage to hand the Vaqueros their first women’s golf losses of the year.
Canyons shot 336 on the par-72, 5,700-yard Elkins Ranch course in Fillmore, beating Citrus by four shots and the Vaqueros by five. SBCC (29-2, 13-2) is still in first in conference, but Citrus (12-3) moved within one game and Canyons is two back.
Carolin Chang led the Vaqueros, taking second place with a 77. She was one stroke behind the medalist, Julie Youn of Canyons.
“It was a little longer course and it kind of ate us up,” said Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez. “The other teams were ready and they got us. We had a few players sick and we’re still missing Vanesa Villa.”
Villa, SBCC’s No. 3 player, missed her second straight match with an injury.
SBCC will host the North-South Invitational, an 18-school tourney featuring the best teams in the state, on Sunday and Monday at Morro Bay GC.
