Parker Coffin and Lakey Peterson enjoyed great success over the weekend in their respective World Surf League events. Coffin won the Fins Pro Junior in Belmar, New Jersey while Peterson earned a berth in the semifinals of the Swatch Women’s Pro World Tour event at Trestles in San Clemente.

The WSL called Peterson’s quarterfinal victory a “huge” upset:

Peterson (USA) delivered a huge upset by eliminating the world No. 1 Courtney Conlogue (USA) in the Quarterfinals. Peterson, who is currently in 5th place on the Jeep Leaderboard, started with a bang and delivered an 8.93 for a series of beautiful, wrapping turns. She continued her impressive performance and backed up her first score with a 7.83 for a convincing lead. Despite a valiant effort, Conlogue couldn’t find the 8.84 required. Peterson heads to the Semifinals and Conlogue goes home in 5th place.

“I was really focused in that heat,” said Peterson. “Courtney is just so good and she’s been one of the best surfers out here all week so I was trying to stick to my game plan. I’m stoked to be at Lowers, it’s just so much fun, and to get passed the Quarterfinals.”

“That heat was a bit of a bummer, I thought that first wave was going to be amazing,” said Conlogue. “Things didn’t go my way but there’s still three events left this year and I’m going to hold my head high, learn from my mistakes and look forward.”

Peterson, seeking her first WSL contest victory since winning the U.S. Open in 2012, will surf against South African Bianca Buitendag when the competition resumes. Carissa Moore (HAW) faces Dimity Stoyle (AUS) in the other semifinal. Monday has been called a lay day.

Coffin won his first Pro Junior contest of 2015. The event was combined with the Pacifico Belmar Pro Men’s QS1000 won by Michael Dunphy. Coffin, the reigning North American Junior Series champion, clinched the title in New Jersey last year with a runner-up result. This year Coffin is in second place trailing Kanoa Igarashi. The RVCA Junior Pro in Newport Beach in late September is the next North American Pro Junior Series event.

The World Surf League issued a report from the Fins Pro Junior:

Coffin (USA) battled for his Fins Pro Junior title against a stacked heat of Noah Schweizer (USA)Elijah Gates (HAW), and Josh Burke (BRB). Going blow for blow with Schwiezer in the final minutes, Coffin earned the better of the exchanges and was elated with his first North America Junior Series win of the year.

“I’m so psyched to win this one,” Coffin said. “I love this contest, I come every year and to win it in my last year of Juniors feels super good. This is my first final I’ve made in the Junior this year and to win so it’s unbelievable – I’ll be coming back for the QS. I feel like I didn’t do anything special but I got the best waves and did my best not to over surf them which really worked out.”

It was no easy road for Coffin though, still advancing through each round, and getting revenge on Schweizer for topping him in the Semifinal. Making his best run of the year in this event, the younger of the California Coffin brothers was thrilled to earn an impressive victory to cap off the East Coast leg.

“Noah’s been smoking me this whole contest and I just tried to find myself on the best waves – it was the only way to beat him,” Coffin said. “It’s crazy coming up against him and staying with him at these contests He’s so good in waves like this, and any wave really for that matter, but especially in these types of events. I had a second in Barbados and I’ve just been stuck not making Quarters so to make one and then go to the final was amazing.”

Earning second, and ending his incredible run on the East Coast, Schweizer found himself on the wrong side of exchanges with Coffin.
