BWP: Carpinteria goes 4-1 at Los Altos tourney

Carpinteria won three one-goal games and went 4-1 overall at the Los Altos Water Polo Tournament over the weekend.

The Warriors defeated Chino (16-9), Whittier (13-12), Chadwick (16-15) and Hacienda Heights Wilson (9-8). Their lone loss was in the tournament opener against Glendora (14-8).

Carpinteria bounced back on Friday night and defeated Chino, a Division 5 school.

“The Warriors refocused and improved their shooting percentage tremendously,” said coach Matt Organista. Carpinteria took 24 shots and scored 16 goals. “Our defense is what kept us in the lead. We made several steals that lead to goals,” said Organista.

Against Whittier, the fifth-ranked team in Division 5, the Warriors won in sudden-death overtime after being tied 12-12 at the end of regulation. Forrest Van Stein scored the game winner. He finished with six goals.

“We were 100 percent on our 6-on-5 advantage conversion and we were 100 percent on our 5-on-6 disadvantage shut down,” said Organista.

The win over Chadwick avenged a one-goal loss in last year’s tournament.

Sophomore,Wyatt Stevenson scored five goals and Eric Thornbourgh had seven steals.

In the finale, the tiring Warriors held off a Wilson comeback attempt to finish on a winning note.
