Bishop Diego running back John Harris and Dos Pueblos cross country runner Christina Rice were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbra Athletic Round Table press luncheon.
Also recognized were the previous week’s Athlete of the Week winners: Santa Barbara High quarterback Brent Peus and Laguna Blanca setter/outside Phoebe Madsen.
Harris erupted for 127 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the second half of Bishop Diego’s 29-23 football victory over previously unbeaten La Salle on Saturday night. The sophomore running back had TD runs 12, 37 and 10 yards in the Cardinals’ third straight win.
Rice opener her cross country season by finishing first at the Morro Bay Invitational. She ran the 2.76-mile course (1 mile in sand) in 19 minutes, 5 seconds. She’ll be running on her home course on Wednesday as DP hosts the first Channel League meet.
Peus had a big night passing the football in Santa Barbara’s 42-0 win over Santa Maria on the Friday before the Labor Day weekend. He threw for five touchdowns and competed 12 of 18 passes for 356 yards. In last week’s win over Channel Islands, he had four TD passes.
Madsen led the Laguna Blanca volleyball team to the Gold Division championship of its tournament. She was named the MVP of the tournament.
