Alissa La Rocca collected 16 kills and Sydney Kantor produced 37 digs in a pair of women’s volleyball wins for SBCC on the first day of the L.A. Pierce Kickoff Classic in Woodland Hills.
Santa Barbara (2-0) beat Chaffey 3-1 (25-19, 15-25, 28-26, 25-16) and College of the Desert 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-20). La Rocca had six kills in the Chaffey match as did Hannah Cantrell and Kaitlyn Clemann. Cantrell also recorded six blocks while Kantor made 22 digs.
“We showed a lot of maturity and composure in the third set, which we led most of the way and then they made it close,” said assistant coach Lisa Gera. “That led us right into our fourth-set victory. It was impressive to see us play like that in our first match.
“We have a lot of veterans and a great mix of newcomers.”
Shiloe Parsons, a freshman from Coronado, and Tristen Thompson, a sophomore from Newport Beach, shared the setting duties.
In the Desert match, La Rocca had 10 kills and Katelynn Womack added seven. Parsons handed out 16 assists and Thompson had 13 assists, seven digs and four kills.
SBCC will battle Palomar in a championship semifinal on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
