Erica Schroeder of San Marcos qualified for the final of the girls 800 meters at the CIF State Track and Field Championships on Friday night at Buchanan High in Clovis.
Schroeder, running in the third preliminary heat, clocked 2:09.41 to earn one of the 12 spots for Saturday’s final. Her heat was the fastest of the three prelims, with three runners going under 2:09 and five qualifying for the final. Schroeder finished fifth. The heat winner was Jacquelyn Hill of Etiwanda in 2:08.06, the fastest qualifying time of the day.
“Erica’s goal was to make the finals and she did just that,” San Marcos coach Marilyn Hantgin said. “She was in a very fast heat and was able to qualify to finals. “I’m sure impressed with her today. It wasn’t her best race, but she used every ounce of her conditioning to make it on.”
Two-time defending state champion Mikaela Smith of Clovis North won the first heat in 2:08.60. Nia Akins of Rancho Bernardo was the winner of the second heat in 2:09.20.
Also qualifying from the county was Lompoc’s Chrisshnay Brown in the girls discus with a mark of 134-09 and Cabrillo pole vaulter Steven French. He cleared 14-8.
Jackie Chandler of Santa Ynez missed qualifying in the girls 400. She ran 55.70. The final qualifying mark was 55.55.
