SBCC cornerback Jacob Girgle is transferring to New Mexico.
SBCC free safety Jacob Girgle has accepted a full scholarship to play football for the New Mexico Lobos.
Girgle transferred to SBCC last year from College of the Desert. The 6-foot, 190-pounder from Rancho Cucamonga led the Vaqueros in tackles (70), solo tackles (41), interceptions (3) and pass breakups (6). He’ll play for ex-Notre Dame coach Bob Davie, who’s in his fourth season as head coach.
The Lobos are an NCAA FBS team that competes in the Mountain West Conference.
Girgle helped the Vaqueros to a 7-4 season last fall and their first bowl appearance in 17 years.
“Jacob is one of the hardest-working players we had,” said SBCC coach Craig Moropoulos. “He came here from College of the Desert and worked extremely hard during the Spring. He had contact from Northern Illinois and New Mexico and visited Albuquerque a couple of weeks ago.
“He was a free safety for us but he may play cornerback for Bob Davie.”
Moropoulos said Girgle has “great work ethic, great footwork and he’s extremely smart and athletic.” He added that he earned his scholarship by being persistent, loyal, self-disciplined and motivated.
More Vaquero Signings: Defensive lineman Jay Terry (54 tackles, 3.5 sacks) signed with West Virginia State. Owen Houlihan, a kicker from Australia, will play for NCAA Div. 1 Prairie View A&M in Texas. Running back Sage Ritchie is heading to Ottawa University, an NAIA school in Ottawa, Kansas.
