Javier Jasso’s game-winning single lifted Carpinteria past Malibu 3-2 during a Tri-Valley League baseball game on Senior Day at Calderwood Field on Tuesday afternoon. The senior second baseman finished 3 for 4 with three stolen bases and an RBI for the Warriors.
Heading into the bottom of the 7th, Ricky Medina smashed a hit off the Sharks 3rd baseman and reached 2nd with no outs on a throwing error. Following this, senior Jorge Arroyo executed a perfect sacrifice to move Medina to 3rd base. Subsequently, Jasso drove an 0-1 fastball through the drawn in infield to bring Medina home for the winning score.
“Today, we celebrated each of our six seniors and their families by playing an inning on their behalf,” said Carpinteria head coach Pat Cooney. “It was great to have Jorge and Javier figure in the winning run and memorable outcome. Each of the seniors can be proud of their contribution today and throughout their time here.”
Warriors starter Diego Contreras threw 5 and 1/3 innings while surrendering 5 hits, two walks, and striking out three. After giving up a 2-run homer in the first inning, he and reliever David Martinez combined to blank Malibu for the remainder of the game.
“Pitching and defense kept us in the game,” added coach Cooney. “Diego was really patient and had exactly the right response to the early home run. David was solid as ever out of the pen and our offense did just enough to scratch back into the game and win.”
The 2-0 deficit was erased by Carpinteria as Jasso scored on a 1st to 3rd double steal in the 3rd inning and when Sal Delgado scored from 3rd base on Malcolm Gordon’s sacrifice fly in the 4th.
With the victory, the Warriors improve their record to 8-14, 5-6 league on the season. Carpinteria heads to Malibu on Thursday with the possibility of earning a playoff berth. However, should the Sharks win on Thursday, the teams would face each other in a play-in game on Friday at a neutral site.
