UCSB’s Albert Hughes

UCSB’s Albert Hughes hits the books as hard as he hits the weight room. One of the best throwers in UCSB track & field history, Hughes also has a 3.5 GPA and plans to go to law school after college.

The senior philosophy major was recognized as UCSB’s Athletic Round Table Scholar-Athlete of the Year at Monday’s press luncheon.

Hughes is not just UCSB’s scholar-athlete of the year but has also been awarded the Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the entire Big West Conference.

A member of Student-Athlete Advisory Board, Hughes’ leadership qualities led him to being named captain of the Gauchos’ track & field team. Hughes came to UCSB as a walk-on but has risen to No. 3 all-time in the hammer throw and No. 8 all-time in discus.

Other than attending law school, his plans for after college include training for a possible run at the Olympics and continuing a burgeoning coaching career.

The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table recognizes a senior from each local high school and college throughout the school year. UCSB was the last for 2014-15.
