Running for Caesar Flores is about making himself better. The Dos Pueblos senior is headed to Graceland University in Iowa to play football next year and joined the track & field team looking to stay sharp.
Running is one of three areas of focus for Flores when it comes to becoming a better football player.
“Weights, running, and field work. I feel like that’s the major three that I work on a lot and I balance it pretty evenly.”
Flores has plenty of upper-body strength that he has learned to use to his advantage in track & field. Without much experience on the track, his athleticism allowed him to place second at the County Championships in the boys 400 with a time of 52.12, a nice contribution to the Chargers boys winning the team title.
“Towards the end, like the last 100, I just remember to keep pumping my arms to help me finish strong.”
Flores competes in the 200, 400 or 800 distances individually, and has been part of DP’s top 4×400 relay team. The middle distances have been a nice challenge for Flores, especially the 400 and longer.
“It’s a little bit of a tougher sprint because it’s a full lap. It’s a good combination of speed and being in shape,” he said.
Flores didn’t join the track & field team until his final year in high school and might have started earlier if doing it again.
“I feel like I should have come out here just to better myself, become a faster runner. I would recommend it for other people,” Flores said.
Flores is a regular church-goer who volunteers at the YMCA’s Isla Vista Teen Center. He plans to get a degree in a business related field in college.
