Brett Patton shot 1-under 71 in the second round on Monday, leading SBCC to a fifth-place finish in the CCCAA State Men’s Golf Championships at Kings River Country Club in Kingsburg.
Patton, the Southern Cal champ and the medalist in the WSC Finals, turned in rounds of 74 and 71 for a 1-over total of 145. The sophomore from Dos Pueblos High tied for sixth but lost a scorecard playoff and finished eighth.
Canyons, the WSC and Southern Cal champion, topped the eight-team field at 13-over 733. Reedley was second at 741, Santa Rosa was third at 743 and defending state champ Riverside also shot 743. The Vaqueros were fifth at 760.
“It was a nice day but pretty hot,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “The heat took its toll on us. We lost a lot of strokes on the last six holes.”
Jeremy Sanchez of Chabot fired a 65 in the first round and claimed medalist honors at 136. Chad Hambright of Riverside was five shots back after an 8-under 64 in the second round.
Manny Manzone shot 150 (74-76) for the Vaqueros and tied for 23rd place. Jake Ledbetter tied for 32nd wiith a 154 and Joakim Flinck shot 155 for Santa Barbara, which finished second in both the WSC and the Southern Cal Regional.
“We took fifth in the state and it was a good year,” Melendez added. “I’m proud of the guys and the way they played all year long.”
