The Carpinteria boys tennis team fell to Laguna Blanca by score of 14-4 during a non league matchup on Wednesday afternoon.
Connor Elmore swept three sets for the Owls, leading Laguna Blanca’s singles sweep.
Today, we played a very balanced lineup, which worked well against Carpinteria’s stacked doubles lineup,” said Laguna Blanca head coach Trevor Thorpe.
Laguna’s doubles teams of Martin Barnick/Atty Roddick and Henry Farrell/Ethan Tyng withstood the challenge, winning two sets each.
“I will take most of the blame in this one. I tinkered with the lineup a little too much hoping to get better matchups,” said Warriors head coach Charles Bryant. “Communication and movement together takes time and I made a bad assumption.”
Carpinteria was led by the doubles team of Jonathan Cleek paired with Bryan Taira, who went 3-0 on the day. The duo enjoyed some good competition against three strong Owls teams on the eve of their Tri Valley League semifinal match tomorrow. The tandem of Sam Truax matched with Ascencio won the last point for the Warriors.
In singles play, Carpinteria dropped all nine sets versus Laguna Blanca. However, the Warriors lost two tiebreaks to go along with a 6-4 loss.
“I base a lot on how we are doing as a team and how we are performing individually by seeing that improvement,” added coach Bryant. “But today was not that day, and I will take the blame for that one.”
With the victory, Laguna Blanca improves to 13-3 overall and await their CIF draw as an at-large team. The Owls have won 11 of their last 12 matches.
With the defeat, Carpinteria wraps up its season with a record of 9-11 overall and 2-6 in the TVL.
