A trio of SBCC singles players won in the first round of the CCCAA State Individual Tennis Tournament on Thursday, then all three were eliminated by highly seeded players.
Marcela Massaglia cruised past Maddy Klein of Grossmont 6-1, 6-0 before falling to Vanessa Teves of Modesto, the No. 3 seed in the North, 6-2, 6-1 in the event that’s part of the 115th Ojai Tournament.
Maddie Seeds rallied to beat Barbara Haikal of Desert 3-6, 6-0, 6-0, then fell to Betsy Samonte (#2 North) of Santa Rosa 6-3, 6-3.
Tess Kolkman outlasted Jacklyn Lee of De Anza 7-6, 6-1 and pushed Jaella Conway of American River (#5 seed, North) to three sets before losing 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.
“We played great in the first round but unfortunately all three players drew top seeds and didn’t make it to the third round,” said coach Lance Kronberg.
In doubles, Massaglia/Seeds topped Brianna Hooks/Liliana Yamauchi of San Diego City 6-2, 6-0, then lost to the No. 9 seed from the North, Britney Leon and Parker Pilati of State team runner-up Modesto, 6-1, 6-4.
Amanda Berke/Edda von Hodenberg lost to a strong Orange Coast team (Hali Dickson/Emily Nickles) in the opening round, 6-1, 6-0. Dickson was the Orange Empire Conference singles champion and is seeded #6 in the State singles.
