San Marcos sophomore Erica Schroeder made a strong push on the backstretch and finished fifth in a strong field in the women’s invitational 800 meters on Saturday night at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational.
Schroeder set a school record with a time of 2:10.11. She was edged out for fourth by Cassie Durgy of Huntington Beach (2:10.10). Two-time state champion Mikaela Smith of Clovis North won in 2:08.44, Canada’s Ginelle DiMone was second in 2:09.29 and Colter Jordyn of Colorado was third in 2:09.80.
Schroeder, last year’s CIF-SS Division 3 champion, was in the rear of the field for a lap and a half before making her move.
“She ran a perfect race,” San Marcos coach Marilyn Hantgin said. “She never panicked and ran her race.”
Devon Block-Funkhouser won her heat in the open 300 hurdles and finished fourth overall with a personal best of 44.79. Block-Funkhouser was the fastest competitor from the Southern Section in the field. Danielle Burns of Mountain Point, Ariz. had the fastest time at 43.43.
In other results, Adilene Aldapa ran the mile in 5:05.91 and the San Marcos girls 4×100 relay team clocked 50.30.
In multi-events, Santa Barbara High junior Natasha Feshbach finished 10th with 4,449 points. Senior Lyndsey Lopes of Clovis West won with 4,984 points.
