San Marcos and Santa Barbara High swam against each other on Wednesday in the final dual meet of the season for both teams. With the Channel League Championships next week and CIF competition after that, there was still plenty to swim for the two rivals.

The Royals’ girls team completed an undefeated dual meet season and the Royals boys team topped Santa Barbara High to clinch third place in the Channel League.

Individual wins by Alex Zauner, George Kuesis and Sean Apsey led the Royals boys team to its first team win over the Dons in many years. The Royals edged the Dons 96-90 thanks to victories in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.

Patrick Rowley, Apsey, Sean Hopkins and Jack Corbin swam on the medley team while the 200 free squad consisted of Kuesis, Corbin, Billy Schulte and Zauner.

Santa Barbara High’s boys won just as many individual races and won the diving competition. Ben Brewer (200 IM and 500 free), Alex Roderick (200 and 100 free) and Cuyler Gabriel (100 back) won their respective events. Sevi Multin, Evan Blix, and Dario Bucy enjoyed PRs.

Royals head coach Chuckie Roth singled out Amanda Hayes, Piper Smith and Jamie “Jamal” Stryker for their performances. Hayes posted a strong time of 59.42 in the 100 butterfly. Smith won the 50 free in 23.05 and recorded a time of 56.21 in the 100. Stryker impressed her coach in the 200 and 500 free.

The Royals girls won 113-70.

Jessee Ransone claimed a close 200 freestyle race for Santa Barbara High’s one individual win other than Nina Enholm in diving.
