San Marcos centerfielder Sarah Douglas preserved the Royals’ 4-3 non-league win over Fillmore on Wednesday by throwing out the game-tying run at home plate to end the game. Catcher Hailey Fryklund made the tag as Fillmore’s Lindsey Brown was sliding in to score.
Douglas fielded a hit to right-center field and made the throw in one fluid motion. Fryklund made a clean grab on the throw and reached back to tag an incoming Brown in a close play at the plate.
“I am exceptionally proud of our team for continuing to play sound defense in support of our pitchers. Sarah’s throw to the plate and Hailey’s concentration to complete the play was exciting way to end the game,” said Royals head coach Jeff Swann.
Aliyah Huerta-Leipner pitched a complete game to earn the win for San Marcos. She helped her own cause at the plate with a 3 for 3 day and 2 runs scored.
Fryklund made a difference with the bat, too, hitting a pair of doubles and scoring a run. Caitlin Tucker was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
The Royals trailed 2-1 in the fifth inning until a three-run bottom half pushed San Marcos ahead 4-2.
“We hit the ball well the entire game, but the Fillmore defense made some excellent plays to prevent us from scoring,” explained Swann. “I reminded the team that their hits would eventually start to find open field, and we were able to string a few nice hits together in the 5th to take the lead.”
Fillmore scored its third run in the top half of the seventh before the tying run was thrown out at the plate.
The victory improved San Marcos to 9-5 on the season while Fillmore falls to 4-4.
