A late night at Angels Stadium on Wednesday turned out to be a non-factor in Thursday’s 8-2 non-league victory for Dos Pueblos’ softball team over Simi Valley.
The Chargers team was recognized in Anaheim for being an CIF Academic Team Champion this year. Head coach Jon Uyesaka said he was concerned the late night would carry into Thursday’s game against Simi Valley, the No. 9 team in Division 2.
No such problems for the Chargers as they scored three runs in the third inning and added five more in the fifth. Simi Valley managed single runs in final two innings against Dos Pueblos pitcher Veronika Gulvin.
“It was a relief going up 3-0 in the third against the strong hitting team in Simi Valley,” noted Chargers head coach Jon Uyesaka. “Several of the girls on our teams play together in the travel circuit, so they know each other well.”
Melissa Spink robbed Simi Valley’s Emily Chandler of a home run with a catch over the centerfield fence and scored the game’s first run. Sam Sander was 3 for 3 with an RBI and run scored. Jade Sinskul finished 2 for 3 with two RBI.
Gulvin took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and finished with seven strikeouts and zero earned runs allowed. She was 2 for 4 at the plate.
Dos Pueblos, ranked No. 5 in Division 4, improves to 15-4, 6-1. The Chargers play next on Saturday against Oxnard.
