Djata Nyaawie shut down the Toads’ offense with some solid defense behind him, and Cate defeated Thacher 6-1 during a Frontier League baseball game in Ojai on Tuesday afternoon.
The senior right hander pitched a complete game for the Rams, striking out two in seven innings, allowing just five hits and one run with two walks.
“It was a good bounce back game for us. Our last contest left a bad taste in our mouth and I’m proud of the way we responded,” said Cate assistant coach David Soto. “Our defensive performance was much better and it’s something that we hope will keep trending upward.”
The Rams were led on the plate by Joel Revo, who went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Nyaawie and Humza Khurshid each went 1-3 with an RBI. Throughout the game, Duffy Montgomery and Dean Smith were both consistent pests on the base paths for the Toad’s defense.
Coach Soto also gave high praise to the defensive efforts of Khurshid, Dylan Ell, and Jake Dexter-Meldrum.
Cate will complete their series with Thatcher on Saturday.
