Carpinteria received a quality start from JV call-up Albert Hugo at the Santa Paula Classic on Wednesday. It wasn’t until the sixth inning when things fell apart for the Warriors, who gave up nine late runs in a 12-3 loss to Channel Islands that was called after six innings.
The tournament game ended after reaching the 2.5 hour time limit.
The Warriors were playing their fourth game in three days and their pitching options were exhausted. Hugo, a sophomore, was elevated to varsity and debuted with six strikeouts in four innings. Hugo scattered six hits and allowed three runs in the first inning.
The Warriors rallied to tie the game and had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth inning but could not take the lead.
“This game matched our overall performance in the tournament,” said Warriors head coach Pat Cooney. “A great deal of positive action and really good baseball balanced with some mediocre play. It was great to see our entire roster play today and contribute to a valuable experience in the tournament for each other.”
Sal Delgado was 2 for 3 with an RBI triple and a run scored. Nick Walker was 2 for 2 with an RBI double. Dominic Sturdivan’s sixth-inning double was his first varsity hit.
Carpinteria (3-8) begins Tri-Valley League play on the road next Wednesday.
