Carpinteria sophomore Sal Delgado didn’t allow an earned run in his start on Friday but the Warriors fell to Grace Brethren 6-1 in a Tri-Valley League game.
Delgado allowed two unearned runs in five innings and struck out eight batters. He left trailing 2-0.
The Lancers scored two more in the sixth and two in the seventh after the Warriors cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Troy Frazier earned the pitching victory for Grace Brethren.
Carpinteria scored its run on a two-out single by Diego Contreras. Robert Warren scored from second base after he reached base on a single and advanced to scoring position on a stolen base. Contreras finished with two hits.
Warriors head coach Pat Cooney said the team improved from a poor defensive showing in Wednesday’s 11-0 loss to Grace Brethren, which is now 4-0 in league play.
“We played better. Not yet good enough to win, but better,” Cooney said. “Grace Brethren has a deep pitching staff, a balanced line up, and they play solid defense. We are attempting to raise the level of expectation so that we can be competitive down the stretch. It won’t happen all at once but we will get there.”
The Warriors, 3-10 overall, fall to 0-2 in the TVL standings. Up next week is a two-game series with Nordhoff.
