The momentum from Friday’s dramatic extra-inning win over San Marcos carried over to Saturday for the Santa Barbara High baseball team, as the Dons pulled out a 4-3 victory at L.A. City Section power Chatsworth in the Chatsworth Tournament.
The Chancellors pulled to within one run in the fifth inning but they were shut down the rest of the way by relievers John Jensen and Dalton Schroeder. Jensen finished out the fifth and Schroeder pitched the last two innings to earn the save for starter Alex Chicote. It was the first varsity win for Chicote, a JV call-up, and the fourth save for Schroeder.
Schroeder helped Santa Barbara take a 3-1 lead in the fourth with a RBI triple. Schroeder scored on a groundout by Christian Loza.
The Dons added a run after two outs in the fifth on Carter Soto’s single and a booming double to the wall off the bat of Trevor Moropoulos. Moropoulos had the game-winning two-run hit to beat San Marcos on Friday.
Chatsworth, ranked 13th in the L.A. Times Southland poll, scored twice in the fifth, capitalizing on three walks, a hit batter and a double by Adrian Acosta. Jensen came in for Chicote and got the final two outs of the inning. The Dons then handed the ball to Schroeder to finish the game.
Santa Barbara returns to Channel League action this week with a big two-game series against Dos Pueblos. The teams are tied for first place at 4-2. The first game is Tuesday at Eddie Mathews Field, while Friday’s game is at DP.
