Jake Dexter-Meldrum’s RBI double put Cate in the lead for good in Wednesday’s non-league 6-4 victory over Pacifica Christian.
The Rams scored in almost every inning to stay in front of Pacifica Christian, which tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the top of the fifth. Dexter-Meldrum drove home the game-winning run with a double in the bottom half of the inning. Dean Smith squeezed home an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sophomore lefty Joel Revo pitched six innings to earn the victory. Humza Kurshid recorded a save with a scoreless seventh inning. Sophomore Ed Lee made the game’s top defensive play, a running catch in left field that thwarted a Pacifica Christian rally.
Cate snapped a three-game losing streak with the result.
“I’m proud of the way our guys bounced back. We had hit a bit of a rough patch and instead of feeling sorry for ourselves, we picked ourselves up and were able to grind out a win,” said Rams assistant coach Dave Soto. “We played really unselfish baseball, with guys giving up their at bats for the betterment of the team. Our young guys continue to step up and they will need to as the season goes on.”
It was Cate’s final tune-up before starting Frontier League play next Wednesday against Villanova.
